Four days away from Sunday’s runoff presidential election, Ernesto Muyshondt, vice president of ARENA’s executive body, the COENA, has announced that the party will undergo a dramatic restructuring of its leadership after the elections, including his own probable retirement from the COENA. Muyshondt is only one of three members of the 15-person COENA that survived the restructuring the party undertook after its historic loss at the polls in 2009. The announcement comes as polls continue to show the FMLN leading by a large margin, and is widely believed to be the result of the rampant infighting which has occurred throughout the electoral season within the ARENA party due to the shortcomings of Norman Quijano’s campaign.
